Course Aims

This course provides an introduction to different aspects of human development from a lifespan perspective. It introduces the factors and processes in the development and psychological adjustment, including critical concepts, theories and studies that provide a broad understanding of the nature and needs of individuals at all developmental levels, and specific developmental issues and concerns in different cultural contexts. While recognising and portraying a sequential agenda of important changes occurring at all ages throughout the lifespan, attention is given to the diversity of human growth and behaviour, and there is a particular focus on Hong Kong and Chinese context for human development.

Course Objectives

Specifically, this course helps students:

1. appreciate and critically examine the main theoretical traditions and research
    studies in developmental psychology;

2. understand the diversity of influences on the perceptual, cognitive and social
    development of humans over the lifespan;

3. understand human growth as a “developmental line” rather than a series of
    separate stages;

4. recognise various aspects of development reciprocally interacting each other
    rather than progress independently;

5. have a clear understanding of the major issues in developmental psychology –
    from the effects of day care to dying and bereavement;

6. familiarise themselves with the research and systematic observation methods
    used in studies in developmental psychology;

7. grasp the way in which such research or observation connects with debates
    about the contribution of certain factors to development, and appreciate the
    challenges of carrying out empirical work with young children;

8. recognise, convey and discuss some of the practical applications of the findings
    of research on lifespan development psychology;

9. become aware of the limitations of applying western theories and research
    studies to Chinese context.
