Course Aims

The course provides a comprehensive and critical study of the major contemporary theories of counselling and psychotherapy. It also introduces the basic principles and techniques in counselling and their application in professional counselling settings. Topics covered include the foundation and understanding of the philosophical bases of the helping processes; professional helpers roles; code of ethics in the helping process; clients and helpers self-understanding and self-development; and facilitation of client change.

Basic theories include psychoanalytic therapy and its extensions, existential therapy, person-centered therapy, transactional analysis, behavioural therapy, rational-emotive therapy, reality therapy, etc. Case comparisons and analyses are used throughout the course.


 

Course Objectives

This course is designed to enable students to be familiar with the major psychotherapeutic theories and techniques available to modern-day practitioners. It introduces the basic concepts, methods and issues in the fields of counselling and psychotherapy. Models for understanding and modifying human behavior are reviewed with emphasis on their implications for counselling and psychotherapy. After completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. identify themselves as professional counsellors with a sufficient knowledge
    basis to observe the ethical standards and issues involved in the practice of
    counselling and psychotherapy;

2. demonstrate basic understanding of the major theories in counselling and
    psychotherapy;

3. practice theory-based professional counselling and psychotherapy through
    incorporating the general theories into their own personal styles of intervention;

4. be familiar with the procedures and principles of counselling and psychotherapy
    and apply them in their practice as professional counsellors.
