Course Aims

This course is designed to understand and practice various micro-skills in counelling and psychotherapy in simulated settings. Its focus is on developing micro-counselling skills. The course is run in a laboratory style. Skills covered include: rapport and relationship building, conveying empathy, reflecting, paraphrasing, clarifying, active listening, summarizing, questioning, focusing, directing, confronting, and influencing skills, as well as non-verbal communication. Students practice these skills in different stages of counselling process by using dyads and triads exercises, small group role-plays, one-way mirror observations and experimentation; and audio-and video-taping.

 

Course Objectives

This course focuses on practicum rather than theory. After completing this course, students will be able to:

1. experience the counselling process in a controlled environment;

2. appreciate how the use of micro-skills can influence the therapeutic process
    and relationships;

3. carry out a counselling interview using micro-skills; and

4. practice the recording of case progress;
