Course Aims

The course aims to enhance students cultural sensitivity and competence in working with diverse population. It explores the multi-cultural implications of psychotherapy and counseling which includes studies that appreciate the multi-cultural nature of human society; appraise the interrelatedness of personality, environmental and cultural factors which affect the practice and utilization of psychotherapy and counselling across cultures; apply scientific inquiry and theoretical knowledge to identify common themes or elements of psychotherapy and counselling practice that are essential and usefulness across cultures, and to differentiate distinct approaches and elements that are primarily ethnoculturally based.

 

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to :

1. understand the six primary propositions of the current theory of multicultural  
    counseling and therapy (MCT);

2. appreciate MCT as the Fourth Wave in psychology and its implications for the
    further development of counseling and psychotherapy;

3. comprehend the inevitable shift from self to self-in-relation in multi-cultural
    counseling and therapy, thus moving from a client-centered to a culture-
    centered focus;

4. understand the limitations of applying western theories and skills of counseling
    and therapy in a predominantly non-western cum multi-cultural setting;

5. formulate practical approaches to counseling and therapy which simultaneously
    utilizes psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and humanistic frameworks and
    incorporates distinct cultural perspectives.
