Course Aims

This course aims at promoting students’ understanding on four major areas:

1. various research methodology;

2. various data collection method;

3. some data analysis and data interpretation method; and

4. report-writing according to the APA format.

Students will be expected to understand the whole research process which includes research design, data collection, data interpretation and report writing. This will be achieved by conducting a research on their own so that they can have hands-on experience in generating research questions, selecting the most appropriate research method to test their research questions, using the right statistical tools to analyze their data and reporting their findings. Their presentation skills would also be polished while presenting their research findings to their fellow classmates and answer questions from audience.

 

Course Objectives The course is intended to get students ready for conducting a scientific research to test out their hypotheses. The focus of the course will be on hands-on experience in the whole research processes. After completing this course, students will be able to:

1. appreciate the uniqueness and functions of major research designs and
    methods;

2. select the appropriate design and method for a chosen subject of inquiry;

3. design effective materials for conducting research (e.g. stimuli or
    questionnaires);

4. grasp the important aspects of data collection;

5. comprehend the intricacies of data analysis and interpretation;

6. write a report in APA format; and

7. give an oral presentation of their research findings.
