Course Aims

This course aims at promoting students understanding on four major areas:

1. the philosophical foundations of psychological ideas and theories;

2. the historical antecedents, their ideas and theories of major schools in
    psychology;

3. the development of major schools in psychology; and

4. the historical development of some important concepts in psychology.

Students will be expected to understand the historical development of psychology and so have a coherent picture on the bits and pieces (i.e. various fields) of modern psychology. Furthermore, they will be expected to trace the history of various schools, concepts and important figures in psychology.

 

Course Objectives

The course is intended to introduce and familiarize students with the basic ideas and issues concerning the history and traditions of psychology. The focus of the course will be on contemporary and major psychological systems. After completing this course, students will be able to:

1. get acquaint with the philosophical foundations of psychology;

2. get familiarize with the historical antecedents of psychology;

3. appreciate the contributions of major figures of various psychological traditions;

4. take on a critical perspective on issues relevant to the historical development of
    psychology;

5. trace the historical development of important concepts or theories of
    psychology; and

6. have a coherent picture of the relationships and development of the various
    fields of modern psychology.
