Course Aims

This module aims to equip students with broad knowledge of theoretical and practical issues in health psychology and a variety of related disciplines. Theories and concepts provide the basis for an integrated approach to understanding health and illness, and the relationship of psychological, social and biological factors. By comparing the psychoneurophysiological health perspective with the biomedical tradition, students will understand the distinctive contribution of psychological approaches to health and illness, and the ways in which these approaches complement biological and social approaches. The major topics are chosen to demonstrate how this integrated approach can be applied in daily health issues, including psychoneuroimmunology, psychological contributors to and treatments of illness, the experience of hospitalisation, health promotion, and disease prevention.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, students will demonstrate the ability to:

1. contrast and compare the biopsychosocial health psychology model with the traditional biomedical model;

2. conceptualise scientifically the psychological processes of health, illness and health care;

3. apply psychology to a certain extent to the promotion and maintenance of health, the analysis and improvement of the health care system, the prevention of illness and the enhancement of outcomes of those who are ill or disabled;

4. recognise and appreciate the complexity of body and mind interactions;

5. think critically in social science terms, with understanding of probabilities and uncertainties, influences of culture, interactions of the individual and the social group, and inherent individual differences, in understanding the health issues.

6. explore and identify areas for the future development of the counsellors or psychologists in health care service.
