In
terms of possible career paths, there is a definite market niche for
counsellors. For instance, most secondary schools have Counselling teams
staffed by School Social Workers or teachers with some training in
Counselling, and a substantial number of voluntary agencies provide a
Counselling service. Traditionally in Hong Kong, these counsellor posts have
been filled by Social Workers, but with the slow yet steady global
realization that Counselling ought to be an independent profession, there is
a growing need to fill these posts with individuals who have received a
comprehensive training in Counselling.
Graduates from this degree programme may seek employment as school
counsellors, youth counsellors, family and marriage counsellors, mental
health counsellors or counsellors working with the elderly, albeit at a
junior level. With their knowledge of Counselling and Psychology and the
concomitant skills in communication, students might also enter the business
sector to work in the areas of human resources, marketing research or public
relations. For students with more pronounced academic inclinations, the
training provides sufficient core research skills to enable them to pursue
further studies in either Counselling or Psychology.
