Part 1 Programme in B.A. and B.Sc. (Honours) Degree in Economics /Business Economics /Financial Economics  between Hong Kong Shue Yan University and University of Leicester

Aim

The purpose of this programme is to facilitate the transfer of students from Shue Yan University to the second year of the Honours Degree programmes offered by the Department of Economics at the university of Leicester, UK.

The Department of Economics at the University of Leicester is one of the UK's top-rated teaching departments, gaining 24/24 in the most recent teaching quality assessment. It is also a highly ranked for its research. Its courses are designed to train students in modern economic analysis and its application to the problems of business, finance and public policy.

Nature

The 3-year degree programme is divided into 2 parts. Part 1 comprising one year's studies at Shue Yan where the syllabus, teaching materials and standards of assessment will be fully compatible with those used in first-year Economics subjects at the University of Leicester. Part 2 consisting of two years' studies at Leicester. 

The degree will be awarded by the University of Leicester: the degree classification will be based on studies undertaken in England, during the second and the third years. There is a choice between BA and BSc programmes in Economics, Business Economics and Financial Economics, with the BSc programme being more mathematical.

Attraction

1. Substantial savings are realized by undertaking one third of the complete course locally, stemming from lower tuitions and living expenses.

2. The degree is awarded by the University of Leicester and is identical in every respect to that resulting from their regular programme.

3. Leicester University has instituted a scholarship of £2,000 each year for 2 years to students transferring from Shue Yan to Leicester in 2007. The Scholarships will be awarded to all students , however many or few, provided that they meet the standard requirements.

4. In past years students from Shue Yan have on average shown better performance than the Leicester cohort, achieving a high proportion of first and upper second-class degrees.

Eligibility for Admission

 1.    

At least 6 passes including Chinese and English in one sitting in the HKCEE; and    

 2.

At least 2 passes in the HK Advanced Level Examination; or 

 3.

At least 2(A) and 3(O) in the GCE Examination; or  

 4.

Mature students aged 21 or above with a good command of English may also apply, but     this category must pass the University Entrance Examination.

Eligibility for Transfer to Leicester

 1.    

Grade Point Average of 2.5 and a B- grade in ECON 113, ECON 114, ECON 203, and ECON 204 in Shue Yan Examinations;

 2.

Satisfactory performance at an interview with a Leicester University representative; and

 3.

English AS-level passed with grade D or IELTS 6 / TOEFL 575.

Course Structure

The syllabus of the first year of the cooperative programme is consistent with the programme conducted at the University of Leicester and examination papers are agreed jointly by the two institutions. The subjects offered in Shue Yan have a similar content and structure as the first year courses scheduled in the Department of Economics at Leicester.
