Applicant Type
Minimum Entry Requirements
  • Chinese language: Level 3 or above;
  • English language: Level 3 or above;
  • Mathematics: Level 2 or above;
  • Liberal studies: Level 2 or above; and
  • One elective subject: Level 2 or above.

Merits in Applied Learning subjects may be used for additional consideration.

Associate Degree / Higher Diploma
  • Hong Kong Associate Degree / Higher Diploma Holders (of locally accredited programmes); or
  • Completion of one year’s study at a locally accredited Hong Kong Associate Degree / Higher Diploma programme with a GPA of 2.5 (out of a 4.0 scale) or above
General Certificate of Education (GCE) Three passes in GCE A-level subjects. Two AS subjects are considered to be equivalent to one A-level subject. The same subject will not be counted at both the A-level and AS-level.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Overall score of at least 24 points
Mature Students Mature applicants must be over the age of 25 by 1 September of the year of admission and be able to demonstrate sufficient motivation, knowledge and potential to indicate a high probability of being able to complete the programme successfully. Prospective mature applicants are invited to discuss their application with the Head of Department concerned in advance of the application period. Successful mature candidates will be admitted on an individual and exceptional basis.

Other Qualifications Other equivalent academic qualifications (subject to assessment by the University).



  1. Mature students and applicants with the above non-local qualifications may be required to sit for the Chinese written examination and/or English written examination offered by the University.

  1. Articulation to Year 3 of HKSYU Bachelor’s degree programmes will only be considered on an exceptional basis in the case of students who have successfully completed the first two years of an accredited bachelor’s degree programme in a cognate discipline area at a UGC-funded University or degree-granting institution accredited by the HKCAAVQ in Hong Kong or a recognized institution of higher learning overseas;
  2. In order to be considered for admission to Year 3 of an HKSYU programme, applicants for advanced standing must normally have achieved a GPA of at least 3.0 or equivalent in their previous degree-level studies.
  3. Students admitted directly to Year 3 must complete at least 50% of the total number of credits required for the award of the degree at SYU. The admitting Department will devise a study plan for each successful applicant that takes into account the courses they have successfully completed in their previous studies, the University’s general requirements and the specific degree requirements. Students whose study load would exceed 76 credits would be advised to enter Year 2 of the SYU degree programme they had applied for.
