JOUR 260 Computer Graphic Design and Publishing

(1 Term; 3 Credits)

The goal of this course is to help students develop an understanding of the potentials of computer application and learn the techniques of producing professional publications. This course starts by exploring all the issues that shape design. The course breaks the discipline down into its elements, looking at typography, colour and graphics, how these elements combine - the essence of graphic design - and how the process of reproduction underpins every aspect of design. Students are introduced to computer graphic design using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; desktop publishing using InDesign; and website application using Adobe Web Premium CS3. Students are required to complete a number of tasks in different forms in daily life, including corporation logos, book cover, magazines, posters, and websites, in order to demonstrate their understanding in the applications.
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
a)       Understand the broad issues in graphic design, editing and web publishing;
b)       Prepare effective computer design work in both offline and online publications; and
c)        Examine contemporary design work from different perspectives.
