In February 2005, the Department established the self-financed Survey and Research Centre, headed by Head of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. Funding comes mainly from conducting polls and research for local newspapers, political organizations, and government as well as non-governmental organizations. The purpose is to teach students to understand the operation and implementation of public opinion polls in an actual context and to publish papers from the survey-research data. A total of 13 surveys/field work has been conducted. The following table shows the surveys by the center in the past five years.

Students are employed to participate in all research projects as well as the ISD news digest editorial work. They are responsible for conducting interviews and other research tasks such as content analysis required by particular project; or do the news digest editorial work. In each research project, students are led by the Survey Research expert, Mr. Wan Kwok Fai.

Over the years, surplus from the survey projects was contributed to the Students’ Development Fund. This Fund has been used to subsidize activities of student bodies, exchange tours and those students who have engaged in non-paid internship jobs. The Fund has been closely monitored by both the Head of Department and the Vice-President (Admin.) of the University, whose approval on a yearly renewable basis to withdraw the money from the fund.
