AT HONG KONG SHUE YAN UNIVERSITY
The University of Alabama, founded in 1831, has a long history of professional and graduate education in the United States. The School of Social Work was established in 1965 and offers degree programs at the undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels. Shue Yan University has been offering this MSW Program in conjunction with the University of Alabama, U.S.A. since 1981. This program has been officially recognized by the Civil Service Bureau of Hong Kong Government since August 1988 and is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education of U.S.A. (CSWE). The graduate of this program can register as RSW at the Hong Kong Social Workers Registration Board. This program has been entered in the register of exempted courses by the Non-local Courses Registry of Education Bureau, Hong Kong since 1998.* (Ref. No. 460006)
Objectives
(1) to provide the professional foundation for students seeking the Master of Social Work degree;
(2) to prepare social workers for a variety of social service roles in public and private agencies, including welfare agencies, schools, rehabilitation centres, delinquency centres, group homes, hospitals, and community centres;
(3) to offer an educational opportunity for social service personnel in Hong Kong which may lead to the Master of Social Work Degree; and
(4) to broaden and enrich the educational and cultural climate of both The University of Alabama School of Social Work and the profession of Social Work in Hong Kong.
Program Structure
The whole program consists of two parts. Part one is completed in Hong Kong during two summers and part two is completed at The University of Alabama in the U.S.. Normally, seven courses will be offered in two Summer Semesters and one field work education in the intermit period (April to August or January to July) in Hong Kong. All courses are taught in their entirety by professors from The University of Alabama. The whole program can be finished within two years and the maximum time frame is four years.

Part II is the concentration year of the MSW curriculum. It must be completed at The University of Alabama in the United States. Students can choose one of two concentrations including Social Work with Children, Adolescents and their Families or Social Work with Adults and their Families. An emphasis on Program and Agency Administration is possible with either concentration choice through choosing both Program and Agency Administration courses as electives. An internship is required to be completed either in the State of Alabama or Washington, D.C. during the spring semester.

Application Procedure
Applicants should send the completed application form, together with copies of relevant academic qualifications, including transcripts, TOEFL score or IELTS score if available. (GRE score is required if overall grade point average falls under 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) and one recent passport size photography, to the MSW Program Coordinator, Hong Kong Shue Yan University, 10 Wai Tsui Crescent, Braemar Hill Road, North Point, Hong Kong, on or before February 28, 2008. Tuition Fee
Part I : HK$5,000 for each course; total 7 courses in two summers HK$35,000 plus a refundable HK$500 deposit; and US$2,850 for an internship in Hong Kong approximately.
Part II : US$8,259 for Fall 2007 in USA and for Spring 2008 for going DC internship is US$2,850. i.e. total US$11,109 for the two semesters approximately.(Not including books, housing and traveling expenses)
Remarks: Once paid, the tuition fee is non-refundable.
* It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognize any qualification to which this course may lead.
Hong Kong Program
The School of Social Work , under contract with Hong Kong Shue Yan University , allows students to complete the first year of the master's degree program in Hong Kong . All standards and policies of the School of Social Work and the Graduate School , including admissions requirements, apply to students taking these courses. University of Alabama faculty provides instruction during the summer.

Washington , DC program
During the concentration year, students may complete their field practicum experience and classroom course in the spring semester in Washington , D.C. Students need to be mindful of the number of hours required for graduation and schedule an appropriate workload. Advisors are available to assist students with this task.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE M.S.W. PROGRAM
Admission.
Admission requirements of the University of Alabama School of Social Work are consistent with those of the Universityˇ¦s Graduate School. To be considered for admission to the School of Social Work, a student must meet the following requirements:
1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, including completion of a minimum of four courses in the humanities, four in the social sciences, one natural science class with lab, one in college mathematics, and two in English composition (or the equivalent).
2. For regular admission. A grade point average of at least 3.0 overall (based on a 4.0 scale) or 3.0 for the last 60 semester hours of coursework towards a degree (based on a 4.0 scale).
3. For conditional admission. A GPA of at least 2.5 overall (based on a 4.0 system) for undergraduate work, and a score in the 40th percentile or higher on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), or at least 900 on the Graduate Record Examination (combined quantitative and verbal sections). The analytical writing section of the GRE will be evaluated in light of the facultyˇ¦s assessment of the Statement of Purpose and the Professional Awareness Statement.
4. A written statement of purpose satisfactory to the M.S.W. admissions committee.
5. Three letters of reference that indicate to the admissions committee that the applicant is likely to be successful in M.S.W. study and in the profession.
6. Reactivated admissions, transfers, and intermitting students will be evaluated according to admission policies and procedures for the academic year in which admission is requested.
7. International students must meet the Graduate Schoolˇ¦s requirements for admission, including the equivalent of a four-year bachelorˇ¦s degree from an accredited institution. A student whose first language is not English must submit an official score report for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or must have earned a degree from an accredited U.S. college or university within the past 3 years. The minimum score for admission to the Graduate School is 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 213 on the computerized TOEFL, or 79 iBT. The minimum IELTS score for admission is 6.5. TOEFL and IELTS scores must be less than two years old at the time of intended initial enrollment at The University of Alabama.
Admission with advanced Standing. Students who hold the bachelor of social work degree from an institution accredited by the U. S. Council on Social Work Education may be admitted to the M.S.W. program with advanced standing. Advanced-standing students enroll in M.S.W. study for one full spring or summer session and one full academic year. In addition to the satisfaction of all admission requirements of the School, admission with advanced standing also requires a ˇ§Bˇ¨ average or better in all professional foundation courses, with no more than one ˇ¨Cˇ¨ in professional courses and grades of ˇ§Bˇ¨ or better in field education courses.
NOTE: Meeting the minimum standards for admission does not guarantee admission to the M.S.W. program.
