INTRODUCTION

From the very beginning, the results of qualitative social research have played an important role the development of sociology. While many tertiary institutions in Hong Kong have developed various social research centres none of them specializes in promoting qualitative social research. It is against this background that the Department of Sociology took the initiative to establish the Centre for Qualitative Social Research in January 2006. The Centre is designed to encourage and coordinate qualitative research on important aspects of Hong Kong society and other societies.

OBJECTIVES

The centre is designed to achieve five objectives:

undertaking publication projects to enhance the research profile and culture in the Department of Sociology;

providing Research Practicum for students to improve their research experience and skills in collecting first-hand materials by doing face-to-face interviews, constructing case studies, recording oral histories, and personal histories;

establishing an archive by keeping the qualitative materials collected by the Centre for future use by colleagues and students;

organizing conference, symposium and seminars to provide a platform for academic exchange;

supporting the Department to develop local and global network with other academic institutions for collaborations.
