Teaching Approaches

A holistic approach is adopted to cover historical, political and economic aspects of transformation and to investigate their interconnections. Meanwhile, the specialized courses on tourism, cultural heritage, consumption, religion, civil society and citizenship, explore cultural and value changes in greater depth.

A comparative perspective will also be adopted to study the similarities and differences among various Chinese societies, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China. This also contributes to the breadth of the program through examining effects brought about by market transition, urban-rural dynamics and demographic transformation.

A further strength of the program is that it builds not only on the research interests of existing staff of the Sociology Department, but will be enriched by contributions from visiting scholars from Mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore.
