The Department of Sociology is inviting applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor to start in September 2014.  Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Candidates should have a doctorate degree in sociology or related disciplines, and demonstrate the ability to effectively teach at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels while pursuing an active research agenda. Fields of specialization include, but are not limited to, contemporary Chinese societies, Asian society, economic sociology, economic change and development, social policy, social enterprise, criminology, youth studies, and quantitative research methods.  Preference will be given to those applicants who have at least two years’ teaching experience and are proficient in Chinese and English.

Assistant/Associate Professor in Conflict Resolution

The Department of Law and Business and the Institute of Conflict Engagement and Resolution (IICER) invites applications for the following academic position to commence in 2014.

IICER is a cross-disciplinary University Institute, which brings together the fields of Alternative Dispute Resolution, Mediation, Law, Business, Psychology, Counselling and Coaching. In addition to developing a strong research programme, IICER offers innovative and dynamic postgraduate education and training in mediation and conflict resolution. IICER is home to the peer-reviewed Chinese-English language Negotiation Journal called Tan Pan. For more information about IICER, see


Qualifications and Experience:    Applicants should have a Doctoral Degree in a relevant discipline, such as conflict management, psychology, business, coaching, peace studies, organizational development or law, strong language skills in English, strong oral and written communication skills, and a capacity to undertake research in conflict resolution related topics. A proven research record, a professional commitment to conflict resolution, a capacity to develop links with professional bodies and an ability to work with others as a team will be an advantage. 

The appointee will be required to teach postgraduate courses in IICER’s innovative new Master of Mediation and Conflict Resolution Programme (MMCR). The MMCR is a boutique postgraduate programme that features flexible delivery through intensive face-to-face classes supplemented by dynamic online learning. The MMCR is professionally focused and will offer pathways to professional certification for mediators, conflict coaches, arbitrators, collaborative practitioners and others. The successful candidate may also be required to teach in the courses of a relevant university department, depending on the appointee’s relevant discipline. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research and professional activities of the Institute of Conflict Engagement and Resolution (IICER).

  • 5 passes including English Language, Chinese Language and Mathematics in HKCEE or equivalent;

  • immediate availability is preferred.
