DESCRIPTION OF COURSES (BSocSc DEGREE PROGRAMMES)
COUN 110 Personal Growth
1 Term; Non-Credit Bearing
This course aims to promote self-awareness and develop essential ingredients of
psychological health as creativity, emotional and interpersonal competencies, and the capacity
to participate in community life. It helps to sensitize students to perceive themselves both as
unique individuals and as integral members of social groups, societies, or cultures. By fostering
self-awareness, the course aims to enable students to recognize their strengths, limitations,
and opportunities for personal growth. Additionally, on a professional level, the course
emphasizes the understanding of mental fitness as an ethical imperative and encourages
students to establish goals and plans to meet required standards.
COUN 200 Theories and Systems in Counselling and Psychotherapy
1 Term; 3 Credits
The aim of this course is to enable students to become familiar with the major
psychotherapeutic theories and systems available to modern-day practitioners. The course will
introduce the historical context, therapeutic process, the current practice and research
directions, and its suitability in multicultural dimensions, particularly in Asia, of each
psychotherapeutic theory approach and system. The course will also help students develop an
understanding of the ethical and professional role required of an effective counsellor.
Additionally, the course provides students with the opportunity to practise counselling
assessments and interventions. The lecturer will demonstrate some of these skills, and
students are expected to practise them through role-playing.
