Students will have opportunities to access indigenous psychotherapeutic practices, which have
been embedded within Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, the Chinese classics, folklores,
and arts.
COUN 410 Alternative Approaches to Counselling
1 Term; 3 Credits
Having a solid foundation in psychology and being familiar with counselling theories,
techniques and skills in counselling, students are now ready to explore creative and
unconventional approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. These approaches can be used
as supplements to traditional verbal counselling or as primary therapeutic methods for clients
of all ages in various settings such as schools, hospitals, social service agencies and mental
health centres. The course aims to provide students with a wide range of practical resources
through experiential learning processes.
COUN 420 Relationship Counselling
1 Term; 3 Credits
This course is in the knowledge dimension and aims to enhance students’ knowledge and
sensitivity towards relationships and to develop their competence in handling relationship
issues within the counselling contexts. It explores the characteristics and stages of different
relationships, what is required to approach others, how to look for approachability, and how a
person’s own past experience and culture affects him/her in building his/her relationships. In
providing a systematic knowledge about human relationship, the course aims to assist students
in improving their own relationships and to prepare them for counselling people with
relationship difficulties. Students learn different communication styles required for a variety of
situations and develop skills to manage conflict in relationships.
COUN 440 Family Therapy
1 Term; 3 Credits
This course provides students with an overview of the main theories and intervention
techniques of Family Therapy. It introduces the ‘systemic’ way of thinking about people’s
behaviour and experiences, which differs from the traditional focus on the individual
psychology. The course covers various topics in the field of family therapy, including the history
and development of family therapy as a field, system elements of families such as family
structure and patterns of communication and interaction, assessments within family therapy,
and working with families within the context of Hong Kong and Chinese culture.
COUN 450 Career and Employment Counselling
1 Term; 3 Credits
This course is designed to facilitate students to learn the meaning of work in one’s life,
the concepts of career planning, and the holistic view of career decision-making. Students will
explore different career development models through didactic learning and engaging
themselves in relevant experiential activities relating to career exploration and assessment.
