                                     General Education

          Overview
              From academic year 2017/18 onwards, students admitted into Year 1 shall complete a
          total of 12 credits of General Education courses consisting of 3 credits in each of the four main
          areas listed below in order to fulfil graduation requirements:
              Area A: Chinese Culture in the 21st Century(21 世紀中國文化)
              Area B: Communication and Cultural Literacy(溝通和文化素養)
              Area C: Global Citizenship(全球公民意識)
              Area D: Digital Trends and Applications(數碼趨勢及應用)
          Students should fulfil the requirement in the first three years of study.

          Area Objectives and Intended Learning Outcomes

          Area A: Chinese Culture in the 21st Century

               The objectives of this Area are:
            1)  describing the evolvement of Chinese culture from past to present;
            2)  nurturing  a  broad  intellectual  and  integrated  perspective  in  understanding  Chinese
               culture; and
            3)  appreciating the relevance of Chinese cultures on different aspects of modern life.

               This Area puts strong emphasis on:
           i)   understanding the transformation of Chinese communities;
           ii)   appreciating the Chinese cultural heritage from multiple perspectives; and
           iii)  demonstrating  how  contemporary  social  practices  are  linked  to  traditional  Chinese
               philosophy and thoughts (e.g., Yin Yang, Confucianism, Taoism) in various contexts.
               After studying in this area, students should be able to:
           a)  identify the key characteristics of Chinese culture;
            b)  explain the meaning of significant signs and symbols in traditional Chinese culture;
             c)    recognize the involvement of Chinese culture in different aspects of the 21  century; and

             d)  synthesize ideas and concepts in Chinese culture and incorporate them into everyday
               living.

          Area B: Communication and Cultural Literacy
               The objectives of this Area are:
            1)  understanding how human society and culture are formed;
           2)  achieving effective communication through a better understanding of different cultures,
               values, and belief; and
            3)  enhancing  intercultural  communicative  competence  by  studying  different  cultural
               manifestations, such as art, media representation, and languages.
