CHI 397 School Attachment and Experience
1 Term; 3 Credits
This course allows students to experience teaching practices in an authentic workplace
by collaborating with local primary and secondary schools. It gives a taste of the school
environment and an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge of the subject content,
pedagogical content and interacting skills learned from class. Students can also understand
the daily operations of school education in the domains of “Management and Organization”,
“Learning and Teaching”, and “Student Support and School Ethos”. They will assist the
Chinese teaching and related work in schools and attend the designated school activities. Upon
these approaches, this course enables students to enhance their confidence and abilities in
teaching-related work.
CHI 401-2 Graduation Thesis
2 Terms; 6 Credits
Students shall write a thesis on a specific topic under the supervision of an instructor in
the final year. Emphasis will be laid on the methodology and format of thesis writing. The
purpose of this course is to integrate what they have learned over the previous 3 academic
years and to lay a solid foundation for their future engagement in academic research.
CHI 405-6 Capstone Course
2 Terms; 6 Credits
The Capstone Course provides comprehensive training for students who cannot achieve
a total GPA of 2.8. It comprises two semesters: The Fall semester course is discipline- and
department-based, integrating four disciplines within Chinese study, introducing methodologies
of classical literature, linguistics, classical philosophy, and modern and contemporary literature
of China (students select two disciplines among them); the Spring semester course offers
training for academic writing and magazine editing. There will be an oral presentation at the
end of the semester to present students’ academic writing and demonstrate their works in the
form of a magazine. It equips students with the subject knowledge and transferable skills that
will benefit their career needs and further studies.
CHI 432 Teaching of Chinese Literary Classics
1 Term; 3 Credits
This course aims to develop students’ ability to teach classical Chinese literature. It will
analyse the Chinese language curriculum of Hong Kong primary and secondary schools, and
guide students to understand the philosophy and structure behind its choice of classical poetry
and literary passages. It will also explain the stylistic feature and aesthetic norms of various
canonical Chinese literary works. Through discussions on the methods and strategies of
teaching Chinese literary classics, students will learn to design teaching materials and class
activities.
