The 33rd HKSYU Athletic Meet was held at the Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground on 8 March. With the easing of the pandemic, the class arrangements for the new academic year have returned to normal mode, with the resumption of physical sports activities. After three years, the physical Athletic Meet could finally be held again, allowing the student athletes to sweat heavily on the sports field, demonstrate their skills, and showcase their talent.

Members of the University Senior Management Team, including Prof. HU Yao Su, Provost of HKSYU, Dr. HU Fai Chung, Deputy President, Prof. CHEUNG Siu-Keung, Vice President (University Administration), Dr. Wong Kwan Leung, Associate Academic Vice President (Teaching & Learning Development), Ms. YIP Sau Yin, Associate Vice President (Student Affairs), were present to cheer on the participants and experience the warm atmosphere of the Athletic Meet.

After the flag-raising ceremony at 9:00 a.m., the competition formally started. Compared with the previous Athletic Meet, the number of participants this year was not particularly large, a total of 189 participants registered to participate in this year’s Athletic Meet, but among them, there was one Japanese exchange student from the English Department, and six male staff members also participated in the competition. Additionally, the alumni relay races were newly added this year, with four alumni from the Department of Journalism and Communication participating in the Men’s 4 x100m Relay and winning the championship. Fong Kin Ming, one of the alumni is currently the coach of the HKSYU Men’s Volleyball Team. With 81 students participating, the Department of Social Work had the highest number of participants and achieved the highest scores.

Cheers from students outside the ground could be heard throughout the competition, some students made cheer signs to support their friends, while others even dressed up in “Mascot Costumes”, bringing a lot of fun to the Athletic Meet and attracting many students and teachers to take photos. Inspired by the atmosphere, many students and teachers registered for the Student and Staff 6x60m Relay on-site, which became the event with the highest number of participants. The team led by Dr. CHUI Chi Fai, Director of the Industrial Attachment Office and Associate Professor of the Department of Social Work, won the championship.

Prof. CHEUNG Siu-Keung, Vice President (University Administration), told Shue Yan Newsletter that sports training plays an important role in liberal arts education, as it can cultivate people’s willpower and the ability to handle gain and loss. Prof. CHEUNG encouraged the athletes not to focus solely on winning or losing the competitions, but to concentrate on the physical and mental gains and learning experience throughout the process.

Ms. YIP Sau Yin, Associate Vice President (Student Affairs), was pleased with the resumption of the physical Athletic Meet. “The 31st and 32nd Athletic Meets were canceled twice due to adverse weather and the pandemic. Although the 32nd Athletic Meet was conducted online, it can hardly replace the physical Athletic Meet.” Ms. YIP emphasized that the Athletic Meet would not only raise awareness of physical and mental health, but also believe that students wearing school team uniforms or staff uniforms and wholeheartedly participating in the Athletic Meet contribute to a sense of belonging to the University.

Hong Kong Shue Yan University is set to introduce cutting-edge sports technologies for both sports elites and amateurs in the campus. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been signed between the Office of Students Affairs and V360, a sports technology company, which will soon begin to incorporate artificial intelligence, camera monitoring, and big data into an intelligent sports platform to provide training programmes for students with smart devices.

The platform will design advanced training packages for elite athletes in the campus, while at the same time provide innovative training programs for students taking elective sports courses. It will also allow them to access and apply sports-related knowledge from artificial intelligence.

Prof. Cheung said the agreement marks the collaboration between the tertiary education sector and passionate, innovative start-up enterprises. It will enable the digitalization of sports data, creating an opportunity to establish a local sports database in the long run. With that, one can expect more intelligent tools in sports technology will be made available to athletes, providing the essential support to groom a whole new generation of sports elites.

Mr. Thomas Jor told Shue Yan Newsletter that the company shares the same vision with the University in deploying artificial intelligence, big data and other digital technologies in sports applications. He hopes the collaboration would bring out better research and development in sports technologies, and give the company access to a wide pool of AI-talents to further develop digital technologies.
