Sponsored by the Eastern District Office and organized by the Chinese Cultural Heritage Research Centre, Hong Kong Shue Yan University hosted a Mid-Autumn Festival Community Celebration on campus. The event welcomed over 600 participants, aiming to promote Chinese festive culture and enhance community-university integration.
Attendees included cultural sector representatives, elderly residents, and hundreds of primary and secondary school teachers and students. Senior university management—such as Professor Sun Tien-lun, Senior Vice President; and Dr Chow Tak-sang, Vice President (University Administration) —along with heads of academic and administrative departments, faculty members, students, staff, and alumni also took part.
In her opening remarks, Dr Lee Ka-man, Assistant Vice President, highlighted that Mid-Autumn Festival is a major traditional celebration that was included in the first group of national intangible cultural heritage items. As Hong Kong’s first private university founded on Confucian principles, HKSYU sees the inheritance and promotion of traditional Chinese culture as a key part of its mission.
The event incorporated various elements of intangible cultural heritage, including a fire dragon dance and Chinese music performance by students. Talks on lunar traditions and Chaozhou culture added depth to the celebration. In the booth area, participants learned how to make lanterns, including flower-lantern paper crafting technique, which is listed in Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage. International teachers and students also joined in, enjoying DIY Mid-Autumn crafts, solving lantern riddles, and tasting traditional festive snacks.
