As the new academic year begins, Hong Kong Shue Yan University marks its 55th anniversary of foundation and 20th anniversary of university title adoption. The university will further promote the development of "Digital Humanities and Liberal Arts Education," infusing new elements into traditional humanities disciplines. With effect from the 2026/27 academic year, the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) will be renamed as the Department of Data Science and Digital Innovation (DSDI). DSDI and the Department of Journalism and Communication (JC) will form the new Faculty of Communication, Information and Creative Industries.
The establishment of this fourth Faculty marks an important milestone in the University's development and reflects its commitment to advancing interdisciplinary education and research in the areas of communication, information, data science, digital innovation, and creative industries. The new Faculty will further strengthen academic collaboration across related disciplines and support the University's efforts to nurture graduates equipped for the opportunities and challenges of the digital age.
The University looks forward to the substantial contribution which the new Faculty will bring to our collective effort to reinvent liberal arts education in the era of digitalisation and artificial intelligence.
For the Department of Data Science and Digital Innovation (DSDI), the renaming will broaden the Department’s scope, allowing it to host other computing-related programmes or interdisciplinary programmes related to digital technology and creative design or cultural computing. These include the BSc (Hons) in Digital Solutions for Entertainment and Game Applications and the MSc in Game Development and Management.
