Hong Kong Shue Yan University held a staff forum at Research Complex.

Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) held a staff forum on August 26, 2024, where the University’s management team took the opportunity to outline strategic updates across the campus to academic and administrative staff.

Professor Selina CHAN Ching, HKSYU Academic Vice President, addressed the challenges facing the University due to shifts in Hong Kong’s demographic landscape, which have contributed to a low number of eligible first-year university students. Despite this, HKSYU has seen a notable rise in student applications, driven by the University’s ability to admit Mainland Chinese students, who can now make up to 20% of the student population. Strong collaboration between the Admissions Office and academic departments has also played a key role in this success.

For the new academic year, the University received close to 11,000 applications, representing a year-on-year increase of nearly 30%, with approximately 1,500 new students enrolling. Looking ahead, Professor CHAN expects the number of eligible first year students to remain steady over the next two years. In response, the University will enhance a series of initiatives, including continual updates to existing programmes and the advancement of research projects that serve both societal and industry needs. Additionally, the newly established Communications and Public Affairs Office will work to raise the University’s brand visibility and recognition through various channels.
