Dr Shih Wing-ching, Centaline Group Chairman and Honorary Doctor of Business Administration at HKSYU, shared his philosophy on running a family business and his thoughts on passing cultural values and wealth to the second generation.
HKSYU hosted the first HKSYU Talks on April 8, 2025. Dr Shih Wing-ching, Centaline Group Chairman and Honorary Doctor of Business Administration at HKSYU, shared his philosophy on running a family business and his thoughts on passing cultural values and wealth to the second generation.
Dr Lee Shu-kam, Head of the Department of Economics and Finance, and two postgraduate students from the same department discussed with Dr Shih in a panel discussion. Dr Shih explained that his family office includes a charitable fund, which uses dividends from donated shares of Centaline Property for philanthropic purposes. Additionally, the office oversees a family foundation to support the needs of its family members.
As a father of three, Dr Shih is committed to teaching his children how to manage wealth. “Learning to save is the first step in managing wealth,” he said, stressing that children should not invest prematurely.
While most family offices focus on wealth management, Dr Shih emphasized passing on cultural values. He communicated with his children from a young age to instill values and ensure cultural continuity. “Communication is the key to cultural inheritance,” he noted.
